Too many people make the mistake of assuming mental health is only important for people with mental illness. The truth is that everyone should work toward better mental health and maintain good mental health when in a healthy state.

Even if you don’t have a diagnosable mental illness, mental health can fluctuate. Consistently working to maintain good mental health ensures that you can:

  • Successfully cope with stress in your daily life
  • Be productive at work
  • Maintain healthy, satisfying relationships
  • Contribute to your community
  • Enjoy good physical health

Try These Habits to Improve Mental Health and Maintain it

Even people overall good good mental health should continuously work to maintain it. Shoring up your mental health improves overall health and protects you when you experience hardships or a low mood. These healthy habits of a happy brain can improve and safeguard good mental health.

1. Manage physical health. It’s much easier to be mentally well when you feel good physically. Optimize your health with a good diet and by maintaining a healthy weight, getting regular exercise, and keeping regular doctor's appointments.

2. Be social with the right people. We are social creatures, so good relationships and spending time with people are essential for mental health. Be selective, though. Surround yourself with and build relationships with positive people with similar health goals.

3. Cope with stress. Overwhelming stress is damaging to both physical and mental health. Learn relaxation strategies to cope with it, but also take steps to eliminate or minimize sources of stress in your life.

4. Try gratitude. Being grateful for what you have is a powerful way to maintain a good mental state. Actively show gratitude to increase your happiness. Keep a nightly journal to detail what you were grateful for that day, or write cards or letters to people you appreciate and tell them why.

5. Practice meditation. Meditation, actively focusing your awareness on the present moment, is an excellent habit for good mental health. It reduces stress and lowers blood pressure. Meditation also improves sleep. Start a regular practice with guided meditations for beginners.

6. Prioritize sleep. One of the most crucial elements of physical health that impacts mental health is sleep. Inadequate sleep increases your risk for stress, depression, and anxiety. It also worsens existing mental illnesses.

7. Break negative mental health habits. It’s also important to recognize the things you do that harm your mental health and to break those habits. This might include turning to drugs or alcohol to manage stress and anxiety, spending too much time scrolling social media, or procrastinating on important tasks.

Habits to improve mental health are so important. It’s just as important to maintain good health if you already feel mentally well. No one is immune from poor mental health or downturns in mood. Always be aware of your mental health for overall wellness and good quality of life.
